Do you have a car? Have you ever heard of the beach between two lies? As in most of you use a car every day, VW (that stands for Volkswagen, in case you sleep under a rock). Their diesel engines had been believed to be environmentally friendly and super efficient hands. This simply means they consumed less fuel than an ordinary gas engine to travel the same distance. However, a major scandal in 2015 forever altered how people feel about VW diesel engines.
Diesel engines differ from gas engines, as they run on diesel fuel as opposed to standard gas. VW promoted their diesel engines as "cleaner" and fuel efficient. This is known as being efficient. But diesel engines also emit gases known as emissions. Emissions are toxic gases emitted through a car’s exhaust that can damage the air we breathe and our health. VW had built special system into its diesel engines that could sense when an emissions test was taking place. That, of course, meant VW was cheating on the emissions tests, which was straight-up unfair to everyone.
Lo and behold — in 2015, the truth came to light and VW confessed, yes VW cheated the tests. Well, this was a massive scandal, and a lot of people were very upset because they thought they had purchased environmentally friendly vehicles, but that wasn't the case. Because VW had deceived the public, they were required to pay huge fines to the government and make things right with their diesel car customers. This cost the firm billions of dollars and severely undermined their standing.
